STEM Faculty
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
The STEM Department is dedicated to inspiring young minds through curiosity and practical learning with a focus on hands-on exploration and creative problem-solving. Our curriculum nurtures creativity, collaboration, and resilience, equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to engage with the ever-evolving world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. By making meaningful connections to real-world challenges and future careers, we foster a love for inquisitiveness and discovery. Through inclusive and engaging experiences – both in and beyond the classroom – we ensure every child can thrive, progress and see themselves as the problem-solvers and innovators of tomorrow.
Science
Science is an engaging and investigative part of our curriculum. Our lessons nurture children’s natural curiosity and guide them to make sense of the world through purposeful exploration. Pupils learn through discussion, demonstration and practical investigation in both the classroom and our extensive outdoor spaces. Every child is encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, notice patterns and think critically.
Our developing approach ensures that children learn to work like scientists. Pupils build their disciplinary knowledge step by step so they can plan enquiries, carry out fair tests, observe changes and explain their thinking using accurate scientific vocabulary.
We are strengthening our curriculum by focusing on clear progression at every stage. Retrieval practice is used regularly to secure prior learning, and pupils experience practical science in every unit. Teachers are encouraged to challenge all learners by deepening scientific thinking and promoting curiosity.
Across school, we want every child to see science as meaningful and enjoyable. They will understand that science connects to real world problems and exciting careers. Our aim is that pupils leave The Croft confident, inquisitive and ready to see themselves as scientists of the future.
Technology
At The Croft School, our Technology curriculum empowers pupils to become confident, creative, and responsible digital citizens. We inspire curiosity and problem-solving through coding, digital literacy, and computational thinking, ensuring all learners develop the skills needed for an ever-evolving digital world. By fostering teamwork, resilience, and creative thinking, we prepare our pupils not just to use technology, but to understand and shape it. Our mission is to equip every child with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the digital age safely, ethically, and innovatively.
Engineering
Our engineering curriculum ignites curiosity through hands-on, practical experiences. We equip pupils with essential skills in design, construction, and innovation, encouraging creativity, teamwork, and resilience. By engaging in practical challenges, pupils develop an understanding of engineering principles, inspiring them to see themselves as future innovators and problem-solvers. Our mission is to nurture confident, inquisitive learners who apply their knowledge to shape and improve the world around them.
Mathematics
At The Croft, the Mathematics department is dedicated to fostering a deep understanding and love of maths in every child. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, develop problem-solving skills, and nurture logical thinking, ensuring every child, regardless of their ability, is challenged and supported to reach their full potential. Through engaging lessons, hands-on activities, and links to the real world, we make maths meaningful and relevant, showing its importance in science, technology, finance, and everyday decision-making. We maintain high expectations of all children, promoting excellence through the White Rose Scheme of Learning as our starting point. This helps us to build strong foundations and encourages resilience and creativity. Enrichment opportunities, such as maths challenges, demonstrating mastery of concepts and real-life applications, further ignite a passion for learning and provide valuable experiences beyond the classroom. By creating a safe and stimulating environment, we aim to empower all of our children to embrace mathematics with confidence and help them to develop a positive growth mindset and, therefore, an ‘I can do it’ attitude.
