Mathematics

We aim to ensure that our children experience the joy and excitement of learning Mathematics. To achieve this, we direct and steer children to explore, identify and use rules, patterns and properties, and provide them with a balance of exploration, acquisition, consolidation and application. It is important to engage with every child’s thinking, allowing sufficient time for dialogue and discussion, and giving well-directed opportunities for them to use, and apply, their learning. Children are taught how to evaluate solutions and analyse methods, and to understand why some methods are more efficient than others.

In Early Years, we support children in the development of their understanding of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy in a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practise, and discuss what they have discovered and learnt. The curriculum for Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 is matched to the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum Mathematics Programmes of Study, using the Revised Numeracy Strategy Framework, to provide a sound basis for implementation. Abacus Evolve and New Heinemann are used as the core material, with a selection of other texts and resources to provide supporting, complementary and extension activities.
