History
History is important as it is a body of knowledge essential to our understanding of the development of the modern world. It enhances the skills of questioning, researching and analysing evidence in a logical manner, which can be applied across the curriculum and in everyday life. At The Croft, we learn about the major events and issues in the history of our country and the world.
In Early Years and Pre-Prep, the children are taught through topic work, learning about famous people and events, and life in the olden days. In Prep, each year group focuses on specific historical periods: for example, Egyptians in Year 3; Anglo-Saxons in Year 4; Tudors in Year 5 and Victorian Britain in Year 6.
The predominant mode of working across the School is whole class teaching, with group and individual work being used where appropriate. We use a variety of resources in order to enhance our children’s learning of History: for example, stories; reference books; drama; visits by experts; use of artefacts; pictures; paintings and drawings; visits to museums and other historical sites; and the use of ICT for research. Our children are encouraged to question, discuss, think critically and develop an enquiring attitude to History. Above all, it is fun and informative, and encourages the children to always want to find out more.
