English
A sound foundation in English is the key to good progress in all subjects.
In Early Years, children participate in many exciting indoor and outdoor speaking and listening, reading and mark making/writing activities, linked to topic work, whilst following the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.
In Pre-Prep, the teaching of English incorporates many aspects of the Primary Framework. There is a structured Reading Scheme, allowing children to progress and be challenged at their individual level. Children also regularly take part in Shared and Guided Reading, with a firm emphasis on phonics. The English Curriculum is taught by the Class Teacher, with the support of classroom assistants where necessary. Whole class teaching is the predominant mode of working, with individual and group work being used where appropriate.
In Prep, English is taught daily to ensure that each child has an excellent grasp of the skills of speaking confidently, listening attentively, reading fluently and writing creatively. Lessons are taught with a specific focus; writing genres, phonics, handwriting practice, reading comprehension, grammar and punctuation. Homework is important in giving support to classroom work. ICT is incorporated into lessons, where appropriate, allowing children to present their work in a variety of media. Throughout the year, we encourage children to become involved in story and poetry writing competitions. In Year 5 and 6, children are grouped with others of a similar ability and taught by English specialists.
Progress is monitored closely throughout the year and the Learning Support staff are available to help those with specific difficulties.
