The Early Years Curriculum
In Early Years, learning is built around themes and interests. Children are given opportunity to contribute to the themes, and parents are encouraged to actively support us by bringing in artefacts and photographs from home. We follow the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage, which encompasses six Areas of Learning:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
Children’s progress in these areas is closely monitored throughout each academic year by the child’s Key Person, with notes and photographic evidence kept in a ‘Year Book’ personal to each child, which are ultimately presented to children with families present, to treasure by both parent and child alike.
At the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage, each child is assessed according to the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, to ensure a smooth transition to Key Stage 1.
Specialist Teaching
Music
The foundations for children’s music making are laid in Early Years. Specialist Music Teachers visit Nursery, Pre-Reception and Reception classes twice weekly to introduce children to singing and playing musical instruments.
French
A French Specialist introduces Reception children to speaking and understanding the French language. She teaches a fifteen minute session to children weekly.
